Time to turn in, says Gaius. Big day tomorrow.
I'll show you your sleeping quarters, says Captain Baudin.
What about me? asks Terence. Do I have a quarters?
Up top with Ageless, says Captain Baudin.
Yippee! says Terence. I'm going up NOW!
He runs up the staircase again, to tell Ageless.
Captain Baudin looks at Gaius and Denis.
He indicates the staircase.
You two can share the next room up, or one of you can go higher, says Captain Baudin. First one is larger, of course.
You have it, Denis, says Gaius. I'll go one higher.
Very kind, says Denis.
They follow Captain Baudin up the stairs.
The next room is empty, but for a box, opposite the window.
Very spartan, as you see, says Captain Baudin, but no doubt you'll be used to it.
I am not used to it, says Denis. Are there blankets in the box?
No, says Captain Baudin. But do try and make yourself comfy.
Thank you, says Denis.
Captain Baudin and Gaius proceed up the stairs.
The next room is like the one below but smaller in circumference.
And there is no box opposite the window.
Unlike Denis, I'm used to sleeping in spartan conditions, says Gaius.
Excellent, says Captain Baudin. I thought you would be. Well, I'll leave you to it.
Where do you sleep? asks Gaius.
Ground level, says Captain Baudin.
He goes back down the stairs.
Sets up a hammock and gets into it.
Sniffs.
Something (the table, the cloth?) still smells of sardines.
Denis, one room up, is sitting on the box, composing an email to Henriette.
We had sardines for supper followed by apples soaked in sardine oil, not the best combination, now I am in this tiny room in the lighthouse with only a box. I will send you a picture. I don't expect to be comfy. If I can't sleep I'll lie awake thinking up skydiving fantasies, you know why.
He takes a photo of his tiny room with his feet in the foreground, attaches it, and presses send.
One floor up, Gaius is lying against the curved wall.
He is trying to convince himself it's a foetal position, and therefore quite natural.
He has not got far.
Up top, Terence is telling Ageless that Gaius doesn't know what the sea is for.
Ageless wonders if he should try to unravel this anomaly.
