Roo-kai! says Gaius. I'm surprised at you!
Nature is profligate, says Roo-kai.
Not in the case of endangered species, says Gaius.
Then I apologise, says Roo-kai.
I encouraged him, says Denis. I apologise too.
Don't be ridiculous, says Gaius. I don't require your apologies. Let's move forward.
Where is Terence? asks Roo-kai. Did he find the egg box?
He was going through my backpack, says Gaius.
And where is that? asks Roo-kai.
I brought it down to the rocks with me, says Gaius. It's just over there.
Roo-kai goes over to the backpack.
Terence is rummaging through it.
Have you found it? asks Roo-kai.
No! says Terence. Did you fix what Gaius asked you?
I wasn't meant to fix it, says Roo-kai. But I found the empty croissant packet, full of holes.
My egg box has a hole, says Terence. If you're so good, help me find it.
I'm not touching anything while I'm in the bad books, says Roo-kai.
Why are you? asks Terence.
I ate two of the cuttlefish eggs, says Roo-kai.
Woo! says Terence. Did they fall out of the holes?
No, says Roo-kai. They were in Captain Baudin's packet. It didn't have holes
There must have been one hole, says Terence.
That's an opening, says Roo-kai. It's not the same as a hole.
What did they taste like? asks Terence.
Fishy, says Roo-kai. Soft like jelly.
I'm allowed to have jelly, says Terence.
Keep looking for the egg box, says Roo-kai.
Terence has pulled out all Gaius's spare socks and underpants, one spare tee-shirt and a jumper.
He feels around in the bottom of the backpack.
Several pencils, an apple core, a receipt....
AND the egg box!
Is that it? asks Roo-kai. It looks like a flat muffin box with a window.
That's a door, says Terence. Leonardo made it.
So what happens? asks Roo-kai. You push the eggs in though the door. Then what?
They can't get out, says Terence.
They can't do anything, says Roo-kai.
It's not supposed to be flat, says Terence.
He imagines the cuttlefish eggs being pushed though the door.
Finding they can't move.
Being disappointed.
