What You Learn - Part two

And it's not just confined to what you learn about yourself. You learn a lot about the wider world as well, on a bus.

Take the trip home for example. I'm on a different bus, obviously. This one is travelling east. Behind me a group of Japanese girls are laughing and talking rapidly in Japanese. I suppose it's Japanese. One of them says "okay" three times in one sentence. I suppose it was one sentence.

The two girls sitting in front of me aren't Japanese. One has crinkly chestnut hair tied up in a topnot, the other has black wavy hair. They're wearing tops that are not identical, but an identical shade of violet. They're not talking. That's because one is reading. She is reading a small comic book.

I like to see what people are reading. And it's easy to do on a bus. Her book is called Bleach. It looks like a Japanese manga. The characters look fierce, or sad, and have those round eyes and spiked hair. She's holding it up quite high, so I can see. She turns a page. Now there's a cute animal character, that looks like a bear or a cat. Ichigo! it cries, in a speech bubble shaped like a star. Ichigo! I thought I told you to be gentle with me!

To be honest, I didn't learn anything from that. And anyway, I was more intrigued by the two girls' violet tops. One was a tee shirt and one was a hoodie. They weren't school uniforms. The girls were too old and one had long red nails. I wondered if they were sisters, or twins. The Mothra twins! But no...

It wasn't till later that I learned the story of Ichigo, Rukia, the Hollows and the Soul Reapers. And I didn't much care for it either.

But that's not the point.

The Square Root of B

The office of the editors of Velosophy is once again a scene of turmoil and indecision.

Le Bon David: That Stephen Hawking is a CLOWN! The square root of B indeed! Square root of Balderdash more likely!

The VeloDrone: We'll be a laughing stock if we print it.

Le Bon David: What do you mean if ?

The VeloDrone: Well, we could always hold it back.

Le Bon David: No it's too late for that, I signed off on it this morning.

The VeloDrone: What! Had you read it?

Le Bon David: Not properly. I just assumed Stephen Hawking would write something tedious and dull.

The VeloDrone: And instead he's introduced some sort of vulgar competition! I'm surprised he didn't offer a prize. A ROOT-B tee shirt to the winner!

Le Bon David: You know, that's not a bad idea. Maybe we should offer a prize ourselves. Show that it was just a bit of light-hearted fun.

The VeloDrone: David, David! Get a grip! We are philosophers.

Le Bon David: Yes, you're right. And our readers are philosophers as well.

The VeloDrone: Exactly. They won't see the funny side at all.

Bee Memory 2

And that's not my only bee memory. I have a bee memory for each of my children. Here is the second.

It was about 10 years ago. We were living in a house with a beautiful garden. Every day I would hang the bathroom towels out to dry in the sun.

One morning Sean came down the stairs with a stricken look. I've been stung by a bee! he said. In the bathroom! It was on my towel!

I felt guilty because I had brought the bee in on the towel.

Or possibly, we were living in the house with the swimming pool. Or this house, with the apricot tree. He didn't come down the stairs then, because there were/are no stairs. But he had a stricken look, and was holding a towel. I just got stung by a bee! he said. In the bathroom!

I felt guilty because I had brought the bee in on the towel.

Or it's even possible, now I think about it, that the bee wasn't on the towel at all. The bee was inside the tee shirt that he had put on after his shower. And he said, I just got stung by a bee! It was inside my tee shirt!

And I felt guilty, because it still would have been me that brought the bee in, on the tee shirt.
